Luffa is a vegetable sponge that comes from the drying of the fruit of the Luffa cylindrica plant, of the Cucurbitaceae family. This plant produces a fruit that resembles a large zucchini, with a firm, elastic and spongy pulp when ripe. Although it is edible, it is not widely consumed due to its bitter taste and fibrous texture, but the Luffa pulp is dried to create sponges, which can be used for cleaning the house, for washing dishes or surfaces, and especially for personal hygiene, as a body sponge in the shower.
