Sweet Snacks, the Sweet Apostrophe of Your Break
The word snack is of Dutch origin, meaning "bite" or "morsel". It was introduced into English in the 19th century, and referred to a small meal eaten between main meals. Over time, the term acquired the broader meaning of "food eaten at one time". Today, it is used to describe a wide range of foods, often eaten as snacks or as an accompaniment to main meals, practical and quick to consume calories and nutrients, and satisfy a little hunger between meals in a balanced diet.
Sweet snacks are foods that are consumed mainly as a snack to recharge between meals, generally rich in natural or added sugars , because they are useful for providing energy to the body. They are often a tasty and crunchy alternative to classic fruit and we can carry them more easily in our bags and for meals away from home.
Available in many mixtures of ingredients , which can include flour, sugar, eggs, nuts, chocolate, honey, sweeteners, cereals and whatever you like, they are kneaded until they obtain a homogeneous mixture and generally baked or dried. This makes them compact well and can be preserved longer.
Nuts, cereals, chocolate and honey bars , individually packaged or in tubs , nuts covered in chocolate, sweeteners or homemade honey, such as honey brittle , to choose quality sweet snacks, it is important to always consider the following: the list of simple and natural ingredients, the amount of sugars, preferably not added, and the absence of chemical preservatives to prevent mold or other signs of deterioration.
The first sweet snacks, if we want to call them that, date back to the Stone Age, when humans ate simple dried fruit mixed with honey. For example, it is thought that the origin of the term "cupeta", the famous crunchy dessert from Salento, derives from the Arabic "qubbayt", which means "sweet preserve" or even from the Latin "cupedia", which means "delicacy". The first appearance of this dessert dates back to 1287, in a document from Palermo which refers to a "cubaydario", or producer of cubaita, a dessert prepared with apples, almonds, toasted chickpeas and sesame. It is therefore possible that the term "cupeta" was introduced to Italy by the Arabs, as confirmed by numerous traces left by their passage in the Salento area, where this dessert is typical of the local culinary tradition.
Over the centuries, these snacks have evolved and taken on different shapes and flavors, becoming today one of the most consumed foods in the world , to enrich our diets in a balanced and tasty way.
